The brief

The owners wanted more cupboard space and a longer run of worktop in a narrow kitchen. The walls weren't square and the ceiling was low.

They asked for painted cabinetry that looked as though it had always been part of the house, with somewhere to keep glasses on show.

A fictional brief, written to show how a real project page reads. On a live site the client describes their own project, with their customer's permission.

What we made

The joinery in the finished kitchen. Select a photograph to see it full size.

1Painted panelled cupboardsFramed panel doors with simple knob handles, and a glazed wall cupboard for glasses. A painted finish can be touched up or repainted later.
2Timber worktop and boarded splashbackA timber worktop along the main run, with painted V-groove boarding behind it in the same green as the cupboards. A timber worktop can be sanded and refinished rather than replaced.
3Boarding carried round the roomThe same painted boarding continues on the walls at the dining end, so the cabinetry and the room read as one piece of work rather than units set against a wall.

How it was made

Drawn to the roomEvery cupboard is drawn to the measurements taken in the house, so the run fits the wall that leans.

Jointed in the workshopDrawer boxes are jointed at the bench before the kitchen goes to the house.

Scribed on the dayEnd panels are cut to follow the wall, so there's no gap to fill.
